At the End of Everything, Hold On to Anything

Abandoned-building graffiti with a swirly-eyed cat and the line "At the end of everything hold on to anything," a bleak-but-hopeful mood for adults who grew up analog.

A white square sign mounted on a pinkish granite wall, with a blue sky and tall apartment buildings behind it. The sign reads: "IT'S OKAY TO BE SAD AFTER MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION." Text on a gray page, like a book excerpt: "Was it hard?" I ask. "Letting go?" I nodded. "Not as hard as holding on to something that wasn't real." Photo of a book page. Header in italics: Marjorie Saiser. Poem title: IF I CARRY MY FATHER. Text: I hope it is a little more / than color of hair / or the dimple or cheekbones / if he's ever here in the space I inhabit / the room I walk in / the boundaries and peripheries / I hope it's some kindness he believed in / living on in cell or bone / maybe some word or action / will float close to the surface / within my… Black-and-white photo of a street riot: an overturned burning car, smoke, and several young men standing in a debris-strewn street. Torn paper strips are pasted over it. The top strip reads "i like to stay up late on the computer". The bottom strip reads "and look for answers." Owl comic on blue: a 'cry for help' is really someone asking for a stick to fight with, like a marine behind enemy lines. Ends: "All I'm doing is handing out sticks. You're the one staying alive." At night, a hooded figure in dark clothing crouches in front of a weathered street mural, holding a flaming object that casts an orange glow. The mural, splattered with red paint and white graffiti, reads in black capital letters: "THERE WAS NEVER A GOOD WAR OR A BAD PEACE".
