Too Much Protest? A Comic on Racism and Excuses

A 2020 comic shows every form of protest, from sit-ins to emails, being dismissed. It ends with Bernice King's quote on racism and protest. Not a Xennial-specific reference.

Six-panel collage. Top panel, a burning car and a line of people at night, text: "Why can't you protest peacefully??" Each next panel repeats "...no, not like that." Panels show a Black Lives Matter march banner, football players kneeling, a basketball player at a press conference, an awards speech, players in "I Can't Breathe" shirts, and a "Hands Up Don't Shoot" sign. A young woman with curly hair, hoop earrings and a nose ring stands in an outdoor crowd holding a red poster board with handwritten black marker text: "We live in a world where trained cops can panic & act on impulse but untrained civilians must remain calm w/a gun in their face". The last line is underlined. Neon yellow-green flyer printed in green ink. A rounded box reads: "WHITE SUPREMACY WON'T DIE UNTIL WHITE PEOPLE SEE IT AS A WHITE ISSUE THEY NEED TO SOLVE". A dotted green starburst reads "RATHER THAN". An oval below reads: "A BLACK ISSUE THEY NEED TO EMPHATHIZE WITH." A 3-by-4 grid of twelve black-and-white Calvin and Hobbes panels of Calvin, numbered 1 to 12, under the heading "How are you feeling on this Calvin scale?" Calvin goes from calm in a winter hat (1), to grinning, wide-eyed, plotting, sulking, caped and snarling, and running in panic, to a furious scowl (12). Black-and-white pen-and-ink cartoon of a living room covered in dense plaid, checkerboard and crosshatch patterns. A bespectacled man in a plaid shirt sits and points sternly at a boy who stands with his head bowed. A woman in a polka-dot skirt looks on with a hand on her hip. A crumpled paper with a spiral lies on the floor. There is no text. Three-panel newspaper comic. A soldier lies face down in shallow green swamp water. Panel 1: "Jesus, can we impeach President Bush now? Al Qaeda must be psyched at his response to Katrina—the guy's looking like he couldn't handle the aftermath of a goddamn snowball fight." Panel 2: "Forty-five percent of Americans still trust Bush "to make the right decisions during a domestic crisis." I think I'll float over and…
